Hospital Bag Checklist

Your Guide to A Stress Free Stay

As your due date gets closer, the excitement (and maybe a little nervousness) builds. One question that often pops up is What should I pack for the hospital? Don't worry, we've got you covered with this thoughtfully curated checklist—designed to make your hospital stay as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Whether you're a minimalist or prefer to feel like you're bringing a mini version of home with you, this list will have you feeling prepped and ready!

Here’s your no-fluff guide to what’s truly helpful for you, your baby, and even your birth partner.

Essentials for You:

1. Important Documents

  • ID, insurance info, and birth plan (bonus tip: keep these in a small folder for easy access).

2. Comfy Clothes for Labor

  • Think loose, breathable, and comfortable. Many birthing parents love a soft, oversized button-down shirt or a labor gown—something you can easily move in.

3. Cozy Robe & Non-Slip Socks

  • Hospitals can be chilly, and having a robe to wrap up in feels like a hug from home. Don’t forget those fuzzy socks to keep your feet warm while you move around!

4. Maternity/Nursing Bra & Undies

  • A good quality nursing bra is a game-changer. Pack a few pairs of full-coverage disposable postpartum underwear—post-birth bleeding is real, my friend! The hospital will also have plenty to provide you! Don’t forget the nursing bras and milk catchers!

5. Toiletries & Self-Care Essentials

  • Think toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm (hospitals can be dry), hair ties, deodorant, and face wipes. These small comforts can make all the difference in how you feel during your stay.

Unique (and Genius!) Must-Haves:

6. Attachable Stroller Fan

  • If you’re someone who overheats easily (especially during labor), an attachable fan can provide a refreshing breeze. It’s small, easy to attach to the hospital bed, and can help keep you cool during those intense moments. Bonus: It’ll be perfect for stroller walks with baby later!

7. Essential Oil Roller

  • Aromatherapy can do wonders in calming your mind and body. Consider bringing an essential oil roller with calming scents like lavender or peppermint. A gentle inhale between contractions can ground you during labor.

8. Bluetooth Speaker

  • Setting the tone in your birth space can make a world of difference. Create a playlist that inspires, calms, or empowers you and bring a small portable speaker to play your tunes. Music, affirmations, mantras or calming sounds—whatever fits your vibe.

9. Snacks & Hydration

  • Labor is hard work, and you’ll want to have your favorite snacks (think energy bars, trail mix, or fruit). Hospitals don’t always offer options that hit the spot. Coconut water, electrolyte drinks, or even a few packets of your favorite tea will keep you refreshed!

10. Extra Long Phone Charger

  • You’ll want to capture those first sweet moments with your baby, and the last thing you need is a dead phone battery. Hospital outlets are often far from the bed, so an extra-long charging cord is a lifesaver!

For Your Baby:

11. A Few Outfits

  • Bring 2-3 soft, cozy outfits for your little one. Include a special going-home outfit and some comfy footed onesies. Make sure they have easy access for diaper changes and keep baby warm in the hospital air conditioning! I recommend a few in newborn AND 0-3mo - because ya never know! ;)

12. Baby Blanket & Hat

  • Most hospitals provide blankets, but having one of your own adds a personal touch. A soft, breathable blanket can also make your baby feel more comfortable. Hats are great for regulating your baby’s body temperature too.

13. Infant Nail Clippers

  • Baby nails can be surprisingly long! You’ll want to trim those tiny nails early on to avoid baby scratching themselves.

Comfort for Your Partner:

14. Partner Snacks & Drinks

  • Your birth partner needs to stay fueled, too! Pack some of their favorite snacks and drinks, because supporting you is a full-time job.

15. Pillow & Blanket

  • Hospitals often provide pretty basic bedding for your partner. A comfortable pillow and cozy blanket from home can make their rest breaks much more enjoyable.

16. Change of Clothes & Toiletries

  • Pack an extra outfit for your partner, as well as basic toiletries. Having fresh clothes and the ability to clean up will help them feel better after long hours by your side.

Things You Didn’t Know You Needed:

17. Massage Tools or Tennis Balls

  • Labor can bring a lot of tension. Massage tools or even tennis balls can be great for relieving back pressure or tension in your shoulders. Pro tip: your birth partner can use them to apply pressure during contractions for relief.

18. Reusable Water Bottle with a Straw

  • Staying hydrated during labor is a must. Bring a large, insulated water bottle with a built-in straw so you can sip with ease, even in awkward positions.

19. A Soft Nightlight

  • Hospital lights can be harsh, and you’ll want to avoid turning them on every time you need to check on baby. A small, portable nightlight provides a gentle glow for those middle-of-the-night feedings.

20. Comforting Pillow Mist

  • Spritz your pillow with a calming pillow mist or essential oil spray. It’s an easy way to add a sense of calm and relaxation during a whirlwind of emotions.

Don’t Forget for Going Home:

21. Car Seat (Installed!)

  • Make sure your baby’s car seat is properly installed and ready to go. It’s required for leaving the hospital, and it’s one less thing to think about when you’re finally heading home.

22. Loose-Fitting, Comfy Clothes for You

  • You’ll want to wear something soft and comfortable home—think maternity leggings or joggers and a loose-fitting top.

Packing your hospital bag is one of the most exciting steps as you get ready to meet your baby. It’s a small but important part of preparing for the big day. Remember, you don’t need to overdo it—just a few essentials and some thoughtful comforts will go a long way toward making your hospital stay feel as cozy as possible. Share this checklist with your birth partner or best friend who’s expecting and get ready to welcome your little one with all the support and ease you deserve!
